Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Carignan and Chardonnay are all farmed on the Estate site. The Zinfandel plantings date back to 1910, and the Cabernet Franc plantings – the oldest outside Boudreaux or the Loire Valley - date back to 1920. The Estate Chardonnay is planted to the rare and difficult to cultivate Mt. Eden clone. This plant material, brought by Paul Masson from Burgundy’s Corton-Charlemagne and shipped around the Horn to San Francisco in the 1860’s, turned out to be important beyond its source. The original French vineyard died out soon after Masson took his cuttings. Little did Masson know that he was preserving the world’s only example of pre-phylloxera Corton- Charlemagne plant material anywhere in the world!. Our Estate Pinot Noir, grows on the sloping hill, high above the tasting room and crush pad and reigns down from its elevated position as if supervising the whole operation. The grapes harvested from this unique site provide a rich structure to the Estate Pinot Noir ranking it amongst the world’s greatest.
